Independent School Interviews- 5 tips for Success

If your child has an upcoming school interview, the prospective school will ask questions to determine if your child will thrive in the environment they provide and whether your child ‘fits’ the school in terms of their academic, pastoral and emotional needs. You can help your child feel confident:

  1. Undertake a mock interview with a family member or friend. Ensure the child practises but does not overly rehearse answers. It is imperative they come across as authentic and themselves; well prepared answers are a deterrent for experienced interviewers! You can find a list of interview questions to practise at: https://etiquetteandemotions.com/school-interview-masterclass-for-11-and-13/
  2. The interview is an opportunity for your child to showcase their strengths and achievements. Go through with your child and write down any certificates and award obtained, what extracurricular clubs/ activities they have participated in, what they love doing in their spare time including sports and music, memorable days out and holidays. Your child can bring their achievements and hobbies into the conversation. Remind your child it is a conversation, be natural and let the conversation flow.
  3. You and your child should research the prospective school thoroughly- talk to people in your network who have experience of the school, read the school prospectus, explore the website e.g., for activities on offer. You can also find useful school reviews at: www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk. Do not ask questions where you can easily find the information yourself. Go prepared with interesting questions to ask, which ideally also promote your interests.
  4. Should you child be asked about something happening worldwide, nationally or regarding a topical issue such as COVID or climate change, it is helpful if your child keeps up to date with what’s happening in the news. My children enjoy reading ‘First News’ or ‘The Week Junior’ and cut out their favourite articles and share this with the family. Knowing what is happening around them is great for a child’s confidence and awareness, even once the interview is over.

Remember it is a two-way process. Every interaction with the school is an opportunity for you to determine if the school feels like a right fit for your child and your family values. It is an opportunity for you to get your questions answered and help make the best decision for your child’s future.
