Analyse an unseen poem, describe a picture-pre-recorded session

Most leading independent schools invite students for interviews or assessment days which include academic questions. If your child’s performance was ‘borderline’ in the examinations, the interview process may be crucial to determine if the prospective school would like to make you an offer. Analysing an unseen poem, prose or picture is a common element of the interview process.

Please be reassured that usually if an 11+ or 13+ student has passed the written examinations, they should be academically competent and capable of the academic tasks at hand; however, children may not be accustomed to verbally sharing their thought process and articulating their analysis.

Anna Donovan has recorded a short session to increase your child’s confidence in the task of analysing a poem or picture.

Anna Donovan is an 11+ English tutor, a qualified teacher, and the owner of ‘My Home Class tutoring.

In this recording, Anna, has chosen a poem to demonstrate to students how to review:

  • The title of the poem
  • Their initial observations and thoughts
  • The structure and language of the poem
  • Questions to ask/discuss

Anna, also shares an image for students to gain confidence in discussing their initial observations and thoughts, and consider the setting, characters, and emotions to summarise their view of the picture.

If you sign up for the silver package (either online or in-person, you will be emailed the recording of this session). This session is also included as a bonus with the gold and platinum service (as part of the school interview membership bundle)
