Etiquette and Emotions

Tom (not his real name) is a senior director in the financial sector and in his early 40s. He was offered multiple promotions and consistently worked his way up the organisation, much to the intrigue of his colleagues. On paper, Tom did not have the most impressive academic credentials, but he possessed a competitive edge that made him successful and well-regarded by his colleagues. Tom also had fulfilling personal relationships with his family and friends.

So, what was his ‘secret’?

Tom possessed an invaluable charisma and ‘social savviness’ that we teach at ‘Etiquette and Emotions’. We help young people be the best version of themselves and gain emotional intelligence and etiquette skills which will serve them for a lifetime.

At Etiquette and Emotions, we recognise that in the highly competitive world of education and work, having impressive grades or CV has become the expected. Typically, there are several candidates with similar outstanding credentials competing against each other and technical competence is simply not enough.

Etiquette and Emotions step in to bridge the gap between your child’s evolving competence and their conduct. 97% of employers surveyed said that soft skills were either as important or more important than hard skills. However, 46% percent of new employees fail within 18 months and of these, 89 % fail because of a lack of soft skills, such as professionalism or the ability to build professional relationships.

For a modest investment, you can gift your child with the foundations for success in their personal development, relationships, and future profession.

Illusions about etiquette

1. Etiquette is outdated

Etiquette is arguably more relevant today than ever before. With new forms of electronic communication, gender equality, international travel and social media, there are new etiquette rules to adapt to our changing world. We are so attached to our devices and children are less experienced than ever in communicating in person, how to eat around a table and socialising without checking a phone.

2. Etiquette is stuffy and elitist

Etiquette is for everyone, and you do not have to have a penny to learn or practise it. Etiquette has nothing to do with status- it is about taking care of others, making them feel comfortable and respected.

3. Etiquette is mainly about dining in fancy venues

Eating with manners shows respect for the host and fellow diners. It does not matter if you are eating at a fast-food restaurant, at someone’s home or a more formal setting, etiquette over a meal remains an important aspect of social and business etiquette.

4. People who set the table correctly and eat in a posh manner must have good etiquette

Having the ‘persona’ of someone with etiquette does not grant you good etiquette. You can be immaculately dressed, well-groomed and poised, however if you are unfriendly and ignore people, then your etiquette is far from refined.
